Project Summary:
The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), recognized by the FAO, are unique and singular agricultural systems that have a cultural and natural heritage with valuable and diverse agricultural and scenic features, and also with resilient ecosystems, facing serious threats such as climate change, globalization, and more competitive products, and even the abandonment of the activity due to the low profitability, which implies depopulation and loss of biodiversity and ancestral knowledge.
In face of such threats, VALSIPAM project will create a NETWORK of GIAHS territories and unique and singular agrarian systems in the SUDOE space, in order to improve their management and valorisation methods. It is foreseen that an INTEGRAL MODEL FOR THE TRANSNATIONAL TOURISM VALORIZATION is created and tested, to protect this heritage and promote its socioeconomic development based on the sustainable exploitation of its tourist resources.
Innovative solutions will be provided to REDUCE THE RISK OF EXTINCTION of these spaces, ensuring their sustainability and of their populations. VALSIPAM project addresses, for the first time in a territorial cooperation project, the challenge of exploring the opportunities and potentialities of these globally important agricultural systems, from an approach that goes beyond their goods and products. The project promotes an alternative tourism offer of unique experiences closely linked to the biodiversity, landscape, agricultural and forestry practices and the systems' cultural and anthropological heritage.
The situation generated by COVID-19 puts even more pressure on these systems, which justifies the need to face these challenges of transnational cooperation for mutual learning, the creation and validation of common tools and the capitalization of results.
The results will be transferred to competent administrations and managers of similar spaces for inclusion in public policies that support the model, as well as to the business community and other local target groups that contribute to the sustainability of these territories. The model will also be transferred to other similar European agricultural systems in the SUDOE space and others.
WG - Working Groups (Activities):
WG1. Analysis of the situation, resources, synergies, resilience to climate change in GIAHS and agricultural systems.
The WG1 includes a series of tasks that will allow the definition of a common analysis framework in order to better understand and compare the eight partner spaces that participate in the project. Additionally, their resilience to climate change and their available resources will also be analysed. Good practices and synergies will be identified ant they will be enhanced respectively through the Strategy and the tools that will be developed in WG2 and WG3. Thus, the INTEGRAL MODEL OF TOURISM VALORISATION proposed by VALSIPAM project will be completed. Moreover, 2 transnational workshops are planned as well as the analysis of the situation, collection of local resources and good practices, identification of synergies between unique agricultural systems and a pilot action (2 local tests on the resilience of GIAHS to climate change)
WG2. Sustainable tourism valorisation of GIAHS and similar systems.
WG2's objective is to promote the sustainable economic valorisation of GIAHS or similar systems through an innovative tourism model. The opportunity of the new post-COVID scenario in demand for alternative proposals will be regarded. VALSIPAM offers a sustainable and secure tourism of experiences, responsible with genuine relationships with the nature of the site, contacts with farmers, producers, shepherds, artisans and all those who may guide us and tell us about these local cultures and traditions. The Transnational Strategy for Sustainable Touristic Management and Valorisation as well as the model for Touristic Packages will be elaborated. They will take part of the Common Promotion Strategy and they will be subsequently tested in farmtrips in order to assess the strategy.
WG3. Marketing, networking, transference and capitalisation of results.
WG3 completes the VALSIPAM Integrated Model of Transnational and Sustainable Touristic Valorisation with some technological tools as well as with workshops on transfer and capitalisation. Its objectives consist on provision of information about the spaces, promotion of their visibility and facilitation of the interaction between the key actors in order to contribute to the protection, conservation and sustainable socio-economic valorisation of these Globally Important Systems. The following tasks are planned: the creation of a platform for the network of the key organizations and commercialisation of the packages of touristic experience; pilot action: testing of 4 ICT tools (interactive and personalized visits, enhanced reality and audio guides; commercialisation of products and tourist destinations); workshops to transfer the results to public and private institutions.
